Block 12 Fort McHenry
The fort, originally called Fort Whetstone, was constructed in 1776 to protect Baltimore from the British during the Revolutionary War.  Fort McHenry, renamed for James McHenry, became famous when the Britsh tried to attack Baltimore during the War of 1912.  After 25 hours of bombardment, the fort's artillery kept the British away and saved Baltimore.  Francis Scott Key wrote the poem that eventually was set to music and became our national anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner".
